Amelia Fong is a composer, pianist, and storyteller passionate about creating music that resonates with emotion and depth. Her journey with music began at the age of four, when she started piano lessons at Music Showcase in Brandon, Florida, where she grew up. Over the years, she expanded her musical horizons, playing alto saxophone in jazz bands, clarinet and bassoon in orchestras, and saxophone in marching band.

She pursued her music studies at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where she minored in music and studied composition under Dan Caputo and Mark Weiser. This foundational training shaped her approach to music as an art, technique, and a form of storytelling. She then continued her education studying under James (Jim) Veneable at UCLA in the Advanced Film Scoring Program.

Professional Experience

After graduating, Amelia began sharing her love for music as a piano educator at Oclef, a remote music academy based in San Jose, California. During her time there, she taught over 30 students ranging from beginners to advanced musicians, both kids and adults. She also mentored young composers, helping them refine their skills in creating solo works and composing for media. To encourage creativity and storytelling in music, she founded PianoTales, a program designed to inspire students to compose and explore how music interacts with other mediums like film. Amelia is also a published author, having written two children’s piano books—The Great Knight and The Last Dragon—as well as The Heart of Music, an interview-based book highlighting the importance of storytelling and community within composition.

In addition to teaching, she had the privilege of composing media composition for Diaghilev, a subsidiary of Oclef, where she created music for children’s animations produced by TCL and collaborated with directors and producers from Disney and Netflix. In 2021, she worked as a session pianist and composer for 52 Entertainment and BSE Productions, where she released a meditation album called Ambiance on all streaming platforms. And in 2023, she also worked as a studio pianist and composer for Melissa Chin, a Tampa-based actor, contributing to her debut single.

Inspiration

Amelia’s music is deeply inspired by the Romantic era of classical music. Growing up, she was captivated by the works of Chopin and Debussy, and as she matured, she found a profound connection with Rachmaninoff’s depth and complexity. She is also inspired by contemporary film composers like Joe Hisaishi and John Williams, whose works beautifully merge storytelling and music.

Beyond music, Amelia is passionate about film, photography, and video editing. These art forms allow her to explore visual storytelling, which pairs seamlessly with her love for scoring films and other multimedia projects.

Today

Today, Amelia continues to compose piano solos, orchestral works, and music for media, while embracing the joy of playing classical pieces and exploring any musical adventures that come her way. Whether it’s creating evocative soundscapes or teaching the next generation of musicians, she is dedicated to bringing stories to life through music.
